Mahatma Gandhi’s name is prominent among such great personalities.
Gandhi’s full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He was born on October 2, 1869 in the city of Porbandar, Gujarat. Gandhi’s father Karamchand Gandhi was the Diwan of Rajkot princely state.
Mohandas’s mother Putlibai was a loving woman with religious views. Bal Mohan had read Shravankumar’s play on maternal-paternal devotion. This had a profound effect on his mind.
He had also read the story of the truthful king Harishchandra. Impressed by this, he decided to walk on the path of truth for life. After passing the matriculation examination, Mohandas enrolled in Samaldas College, Bhavnagar.
In the meantime, he was married to a girl named Kasturba. Then the family members decided to send Mohandas to England to study law. Taking blessings from Mata Putlibai, Mohandas left for England.
Mohandas soon obtained the title of barrister in England and returned to India. He practiced in Mumbai for some time, but did not succeed. Finally he reached South Africa in May, 1893 at the invitation of Seth Abdullah, the merchant of Porbandar.
In those days, Gandhiji had to be humiliated many times due to the apartheid policy of the British government in South Africa. Angered by this, he started a movement against the government of South Africa.
In this movement, he got a lot of support from the immigrant Indians and liberal European people there. In the end they succeeded in their objective. After this Gandhiji returned to India. After coming to India, Gandhiji traveled all over India in the third class of the train to know the true nature of the country.
Seeing the pitiable condition of the Indians, his heart was moved with compassion. With the intention of permanently residing, he built an ashram on the banks of the Sabarmati river near Ahmedabad and started residing there on 25 May 1915.
In those days India was caught in the shackles of slavery of the British. Gandhiji called upon the Indian people to free the country from the slavery of the British. On his call, groups of freedom lovers jumped into the freedom struggle.
Gandhiji gave him unique weapons of ‘non-violence’ and ‘satyagraha’. In the end, the independence movement led by Gandhiji was successful and on August 15, 1947, India became free from British rule.
Gandhiji also started constructive programs. Under these programs, special emphasis was laid on communal unity, prevention of untouchability, prohibition, promotion of Khadi, basic education, adult education, village industries etc.
Priority was also given to the upliftment of women, farmers, labourers, tribals etc. While leaving India, the British had divided this country into two countries, India and Pakistan. Partition resulted in violence and bloodshed in India and Pakistan.
Disappointed by this, Gandhiji went to Noakhali district of East Bengal to establish peace among Hindus and Muslims. When he returned from there, while going to a prayer meeting in Delhi, a youth named Nathuram Godse fired three shots at him.
Gandhiji ‘Oh Ram!’ Saying that he fell on the earth and his life came to an end. Gandhiji, a priest of truth, non-violence and love, created a new India. He was the creator of the era. Therefore, the Indian people have expressed their gratitude by giving him the title of ‘Father of the Nation’.
